As far as I know creating a website is just a half of the way. A lot of people create websites and then can’t use them properly because their sites are lost among the hundreds and thousands of other. Pleas share your experience on promoting websites if you have any.

Find free directories and subtmit your site there. It'll take time till they'll help you to go higher in Google ranking but still it's helpful )

Get as many backlinks as you can. You can buy them or submit your site to different directories.

Your site content, your site title, meta descriptions and keywords should be relevant to your business.
If you put links to your website you should be attentive while choosing their anchor texts. Change anchor text in order not to be treated like a spammer. Google treat spammers badly )

It's long but very helpful. You should be ready to spend a lot of time if you want to bring your website to the top os seach list :)

I have to read a lot but I know that I really need it. So I'm not going to get tired. :)
Any other thoughts are also welcomed.

SEO is the answer for you. Read a lot of books on SEO and learn how to promote your site

Too general answer. Mark, exchange links with related sites and you'll reach the top some day. Of course it's not a quick jump to the top but it's the most reliable way.

If you want to sell something, I would recommend you to start with google adwords :)

Google for "how to get traffic to website" and "how to get backlinks". You'll see a lot of articles to read.
